SAMMLUNG VERBUND and the Bank Austria Kunstforum jointly present the first posthumous retrospective of the work of Birgit Jürgenssen (1949 -2003). The Austrian artist has now found her due place among the internationally renowned representatives of the feminist Avant-garde. By means of mascerade and role-play Birgit Jürgenssen has shaped the subtle and often self-ironic critique of the traditional images of femininity. More than 250 works will be on show, among them numerous works from her estate will be shown here for the first time.
The rediscovery of the artist was led by the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, which is the only art collection whose focus is on the Feminist Avant-Garde. Within this focus the collection owns a comprehensive group of works (50 art pieces) by Birgit Jürgenssen.
We showed her works for the first time in the scope of our collection presentation in the Vienna MAK (2007) followed by our exhibition in the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (2008). In 2009 the first monograph on Birgit Jürgenssen was published by the American art historian Abigail Solomon-Godeau (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Gabriele Schor (Director of SAMMLUNG VERBUND). More recently, in the spring of 2010, we displayed the artist's work within our focus "Feminist Avant-Garde" in the Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna in Rome.
